Return to Up Close: BOFA Profiles
Montreal. Quebec

AFTER CHS
After Canterbury, I studied at Ryerson Theatre School in Toronto for three years. Following my completion of that diploma I spent a year in Australia.

CREATING
Geez. While in Australia, my traveling buddy and I formed a theatre company and mounted a production of Howard Barker's Judith in Melbourne. The company is now continuing in Montreal

PERFORMING
I am primarily performing on stage; however, I have a feature coming up in early 2001, and I am currently working on a short film due out in December. My company will be presenting a new piece in April and touring the fringe festivals in the summer.

PEOPLE AND PLACES
My training at Ryerson enabled me to have the luxury of working with some fantastic directors...John Neville, Diego Matamoros and Susan Cox to name some. While traveling in Australia I worked for both the Melbourne Fringe and the Melbourne Comedy Festival...behind the scenes unfortunately. But the city is inspiring, and so I felt that the time was right to take things into my own hands by forming Chiaroscuro, my theatre company. We performed in a small black room in this crazy building and aggravated and disgusted and astounded the audiences that actually were accepting enough to sit through the whole performance.

OFF THE JOB
I learned how to scuba dive and now want to live as a mermaid....
And swimming with sharks isn't as bad as everyone says it is...hee, hee!!

PERSONAL LIFE
Benjamin Fox...the gorgeous, stunning, inspiring Australian man who is going to drive me to live on the other side of the world...aaargh!

FAVOURITE BOFA MEMORY
Hmmmmmm. Well, there certainly are a lot of them....
I don't know...struggling so hard to find time to do other things with my life, but hating every moment spent away from rehearsals and the team....laughing so hard I peed my pants...walking around the NAC stage and knowing that it was ours, all ours...learning to trust my instincts...working harder than I have EVER worked before...falling asleep on the floor at Jane's house with the knowledge that she loved us and was proud, so proud...thank you, Mrs. Moore....

FUTURE PLANS
Having just arrived in this crazy cultural ville, my plans are grand and soooooo far away. But in the next couple of years I plan to build up my company, with my partner Venta Rutkauskas, and attack the world!!!
We hope to develop a strong , movement-oriented company that is able to work with theatres all over the world. ( Canada I love, but I've got to keep moving...see in.) We are applying for a grant in the spring and hope to use that to solidify our company's future. Our next piece is an original piece and is a collaboration with dancers, artists, sound technicians, musicians and actors. We're attempting to blur the lines that exist between the mediums and forge a more cohesive and creative exploration.

FAVOURITE THING TO DO
Aside from chocolate and sex....hmmm....definitely working with people to create new and exciting things...anything...cookies?

ENJOYED WORKING AT THE BEST
The process of putting together my own company and performing a piece that I not only act in but produce and design...nothing is more satisfying and exhilarating.....

OVERLOOKED TITLES...
Miss Nude Niagara 1996

MOST PROUD OF SO FAR
I am proud that I graduated from a university, I am proud that I can swim underwater, I am proud that I traveled by myself for a year, I am proud to be my brother's sister, I am proud to be Venta's friend and soulmate, I am proud to be 23 years old with the whole world ahead of me, I am proud that I am an idealist, I am proud that I can say I have my own company, I am proud to be in Quebec, I am proud that I am happy.

MOST DIFFICULT, HATED
I WILL NEVER COLLECT PLATES FROM A STRANGER’S TABLE AGAIN AND HAVE THEM LEAVE A SHITTY TIP.

SINCE CHS
Right...spent a whole year in Oz.... and traveled with my honey boy Ben and lived in the giant ancient rain forests and swam with the giant ancient fish and slept under the giant ancient stars...thousands and thousands of stars...while there were little sand crabs crawling over my sleeping bag. Explored the depths of the ocean at night with only a little torch to guide me... looked up to see four lovely sleek spying sharks peering at me from nearby, and then disappearing into the night liquid...and relaxing,
knowing that they were my friends. I ran through the calm ocean and left a trail of light and life behind me while the phosphorescence worked its magic. I crossed a cold, cold ocean in a big, big boat while the moon glowed full in the distance with an amber intensity...shining like the sun. I have tasted the glory of a warm winter and am deadly scared of Canada's equivalent.
